  1. I remember reading somewhere that this was the first ever real photograph of a human being. For whatever reason it referred to the brushee, not the brusher … but there ya goes, class-consciousness again. And explained at length that those streets weren’t as deserted as they look—the only reason the brushy folks got caught is ‘cos they were static long enough.

    • You are absolutely right on both points. In fact, it was pretty common for people to disappear in those early street shots, so quite a few appear to be deserted streets when they aren’t. It’s also why people looked so glum in photographs. It took too long to pose for people to hold smiles.
