In 1977, Winogrand was invited by photographer and professor Geoff Winningham to speak with students at Rice University in Houston. The video of the event, below, was produced by the National Gallery of Art in conjunction with the exhibition Garry Winogrand, organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. © Geoff Winningham, 1977
Thank you for watching this with me, honey. It’s always great to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth. Winogrand is a trip. But he knew his stuff, even though he was quite opinionated. I guess that was the New Yorker in him. 🙂

It was fun. Thanks for getting me off my butt to watch it. Winogrand was a character.

I’ll have to source that HCB video again and do a post. I like these interviews with the photographers themselves. Cuts through all the mythical bullshit.

I look forward to watching it and seeing your post. I’ve never been a fan of his work, but I’d like to see his take on it.

It was a surprise to me watching and listening to the man speak. You know I’m not a big fan either. However, it was clear from his responses to the interviewer that much of the myths created around him over the years, were just that. Information taken out of context for the purposes of boosting Magnum’s public profile.
